 THIS IS A VINTAGE MITCHELL 499 FIXED SPOOL SEA FISHING REEL WHICH AS CAN BE SEEN IS IN MINT ORIGINAL CONDITION NEVER HAVING HAD LINE ON AND OBVIOUSLY NEVER USED, BUT IT IS IN FULL SORKING ORDER, IT WAS JUST A SHAME THAT THE BOX IT WAS IN FELL TO BITS, SITTING IN THE BOTTOM OF MY DADS FISHING BOX FOR YEARS, A GREAT COLLECTIBLE OLD REEL ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION OR EVEN STILL TO USE, ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS WILL BE ANSWERED…

Here we have for auction a rare 6″ big game Milward made frogback fishing reel in a beautiful condition with bulbos ebonite handles that turn freely set in brass circular cups, steel pawl and ratchet cog, a brass lined backplate, brass spool and a slater latch. The handles are fully removable and the brass plates are set from the underside of the spool and enclosed from the top of the handles – the frogback is fixed with brass round-head screws, which are on the inside of the backplate on the brass surround which is a nice touch!  The reel has an optional check, which firmly switches over and when engaged the reel sounds a loud crisp click on the turn with a great sounding chime from the brass spool, on freespool the spool turns very smoothly and freely and without any rub and one good turn will see the spool return many revolutions. The wood, which has been treated and sealed for long lasting protection and shine and has a deep reddish tone which picks up the grain perfectly. A SCARCE EARLY WEST BERLIN GERMANY DAM QUICK FINESSA FIXED SPOOL REEL, THE REEL IS IN VERY GOOD WORKING CONDITION FOR ITS AGE WITH SOME LIGHT PAINT WEAR TO FOOT AND EDGES (SEE PHOTOS) THE REEL COMES WITH A GREEN FAUX LEATHER/LEATHERETTE POUCH AND A FAUX LEATHER/LEATHERETTE CASE WHICH HAS INKED QUICK AND FINNESSA (SOME LETTERS MISSING) TO THE LID, THE CASE LOOKS CONTEMPORY TO THE REEL I AM NOT SURE IF IT IS FACTORY PRODUCED AND CAME WITH THE REEL BUT I AM SURE ALL DAM COLLECTORS OUT THERE WILL KNOW IF IT IS ORIGINAL OR NOT, SOME WEAR TO THE SURFACE OF THE CASE IN A FEW ODD SPOTS.

Hi Welcome to my auction for a rare Hardy Uniqua 2 5/8 fly reel, RHW

This lovely reel was one of the first Uniquas Hardy made, it was made by George Stone at Hardys factory around 1910 ish

This reel has been very well looked after and still retains a little bit of it’s original finish, not bad for 100 years old

It is working perfectly and makes a lovely sound when the line is pulled from the spool

It has a fixed check and is nice and clean inside, the check has a blue tinge to it

The smooth brass reel foot is unfiled and original with a nice patina

On the reel it states

Hardy’s Patent Uniqua Reel

Reel is stamped 2 GS (George Stone) and the spool is stamped 2

It comes loaded with a 45 ft long silk line which is in great condition (a little dry but not too bad) + around 60 ft of silk backing which is in good condition

All in all a lovely rare little Hardy reel and line

There is one line groove on one of the pillars (see photo)

An excellent piece of Hardy history, ready to use on your little cane rods, or to take pride of place in your collection, not too many of these going around

Hi Everyone,

I have had somone else look at this reel and we have come to this conclusion, I am afraid that is all i can do

I have decided that, for the sake of all bidders, I will describe the reel foot as being a little thinner on one side than the other, at some time the reel foot has been altered in some way

However, I have seen many reels which have been altered, and you can spot it right away normally, if this reel has not been altered, and just worn then that will be a bonus, but for now we will say it has been touched in some way since it left the factory, or even before.
