A fabulous quality vintage French Defiance Quadruple fishing reel in very good collector’s condition.

There are two buttons one that controls the brake and the other to select the ratchet.

The name Defiance Quadruple loosly translates as – Four Interferences.

It is geared with a ratio of about 3½:1 ( 3½ turns of the bobbin to 1 turn of the handle).

There is a small yet stable crack on the handle – see picture.

All of the frame screws and rods are tight – there is no slack or play.

The underside of the mount is stamped – 80.

Diameter of the end plates about 50.55mm. Overall width end plate to outer part of cased end plate about 58mm.

here i have some of my collection of fly reels that i was got about 3 yrs ago when i decided to give fly fishing a go but didnt seem to get the bug for it

all these are in need of some tls and are not all are 100% complete so sold as spares or repairs only  

 1x intrepid rimfly [regular?] all complete but needs a tidy up and a good oil

1x shakespear beaulite in very taty condition but complete and working’ish

1x allcock aerialite in box but missing rivets and handle cover but seems to work

thaught these would be of use to some one out there

This auction is for a Julius vom Hofe fishing reel circa 1900ad approx. The reel is a small multiplier/baitcasting reel. The end plates are 2 inches in diameter and the reel is 1.5 inches wide and was probably originally built as a black bass reel. The reel is in full working order with a spool tensioner and a strong clicker if selected. The only negative to note is some loss to the nickle plating on one end and a little on the seat. Julius vom Hofe built reels in America between 1890 and 1910 and is widely recognized as one of the finest reel craftsmen to have ever lived. I have had this reel valued by an antique tackle expert and know it’s value but am startng the auction at a very reasonable level.

A beautiful vintage Climax fishing reel in good collector’s condition.

There are two buttons, one that applies a brake to the reel, the other to select the ratchet.

It is geared with a ratio of 2:1 (2 turns of the bobbin to 1 turn of the handle).

I believe that the handle material is ivorene.

All of the frame screws and rods are tight – there is no slack or play.

The underside of the mount is stamped – 60.

Diameter of the end plates about 47mm. Overall width end plate to outer part of cased end plate about 35mm.

A lovely little reel that I am tempted to keep!

GILFIN 1000 sea fishing boat reel with levelwind – 1960s vintage EXCELLENT CONDITION.

I have described this as used just to be safe, but I do not think it has fished or even been on a rod.

I found it a few years ago in the back stockroom of a local tackle shop when it was closing down

to relocate elsewhere. It had been there for some decades due to a fault which prevented free spool

selection, the gears would not disengage. This of course would have made it impossible to use.

There was evidence that someone had looked at it as one gearplate screw was missing but when I 

bought it all those years later, the fault was still there. I stripped down the right hand plate and

in due course spotted the problem – a ‘factory fitted fault’!  A small piece of bakerlite swarf had

embedded itself in the rear of the small gear pinion housing, and once this was removed,

hey presto – perfect working order. The missing screw was replaced with a Gilfin screw from

my scrapbox and the reel went into my collection. The reel is 3.25″ diameter with approx 2.5″

spool width with 3 to 1 multiplying, and is supplied cleaned, serviced and freshly lubricated.

So there you have it, a Gilfin 1000 in pristine order, must be a joy for Gilfin collectors but also

still a very competent boat reel for today’s use.
