Here we have a PENN SURFMASTER No 150. fitted with a  Plastic Spool.

Penn originally made 4 models of the Surfmaster and the 150 has a spool width of 2 +1/8 inches. It is a most versatile reel which can be used for beach, pier or boat fishing and has a gear ratio of 3-1 which means rapid line retrieval.   

I used it a couple of weeks ago and it caught lots of doggies….so did every other Penn reel in the boat.                                

This reel has been completely cleaned, serviced and lubricated using only genuine Penn products. It features the Penn “One-screw-take-apart” system which means the spool can be changed instantly and other parts of the reel are very accessible. This 150 also has a rod clamp fitted.

There are the usual scratches you would expect on a used Penn multiplier.

If you look hard , there is evidence of previous pitting on the crossbars, foot, clamp studs and chrome rings….but generally its appearance is good.

The reel functions perfectly and would enhance a collection.  It  will give years of good service if cared for………always wash it well in fresh water and don’t over-oil it !!

A nice little bait casting reel, weight 313gms, sold
in it’s box along with a tube of spares.

The box is good and strong, just rubbed a little around the edges.

Mechanically

Everything
is in perfect working order, just add line and take it fishing.

Very smooth and quiet to wind, the drag works fine and it has a strong click

from the optional check.

Visually

A very nice looking reel, just one tiny mark on one of the end plates

and some slight corrosion on the foot.

I have used this reel for trolling lures in fresh water it can also be used for casting as it has a magnetic breaking system

The reel is in good working order and  condition, it has a few scuff marks mostly on the top and reel foot.

A
nice old multiplier dating from the early 1970′s.

 Roughly 2 3/4″ diameter.

Mechanically

Excellent, this is a very
good usable reel, ready to take fishing.

It winds very smooth and quiet, spins very freely in casting mode and produces

a good strong click
from the optional check.

The reel comes complete with original rod clamps which is a bit of a rarity.

 Visually

The
chrome is very good on the whole but could do with a good polish,

the
end plates are also good with just some scuff marks and small indentations around the edges. As you would expect from a reel thats best part of 40 years old, there is slight discolouring of the sideplates.

here is a very good vintage reel fromJohn Macpherson of Invernessit is a 4″ drum wind and a 1″ windwith a central brake knobit has a big R.E. on itit was on there when my dad got it many years agohe was left handed so and when he brought a newer rodhe had the brass foot  shaved down a bit to make it fitit still fits the older rods with the bigger reel holdersjust can not think of the right names sorryit is a well made reel
